14/03/2011 - Saturday 30th April

Saturday 30th April 2011 will go down in the history of Hollands & Blair FC as the most successful day in the Clubs relatively short history.

At the start of the month the 1st team regained the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield, a competition the Club hasn’t been beaten in since November 3rd 2007, and this Saturday saw them regain the title, winning it for the second time in 3 seasons (Runners Up the other season) by beating their closest challengers, and the only team that could possibly overtake them, Cray Valley PM 2-1. In a game that was always going to be close, Blair only needed a point to secure the title, so when they went 1-0 up through Darren Blackburn’s superb strike into the top corner, everyone thought that the title race was over, apart from Cray Valley, who within minutes threw the title race back into the mix with an almost immediate equaliser. Still, a point was always enough for Blair, so Cray Valley pushed on, and Blair’s top scorer Ricky Freeman, came off the bench, still not fully fit, to score his 23rd goal of the season, and ensure that Blair were crowned champions, with still 5 games to play.

Whilst the 1st team were winning the league, the Reserves were taking part in the biggest game in their history, the Kent Junior Cup (Group A) Final, against a more experienced Phoenix Sports Reserves side. On a pitch that resembled a snooker table, the younger, fitter & better footballing Reserves started dominating the game early, with neat passing between Sam Gutridge & Tom Mitchelson in the middle of midfield, and Liam Collins & Dan Knights using the acres of space on the wings to their best effect. After a few early chances, Steve Dampier fired the Reserves into a well-deserved lead after just 10 minutes. Blair continued to dominate the game, with exquisite passing & intelligent balls into the channels, causing Phoenix no end of concerns. With the Blair back four winning everything that came near them, Blair should have extended their lead with the many chances they created, but it wasn’t until the 42nd minute that they did make it 2-0 with a rather surreal goal. Blair forward Aiken Thomas was clothes-lined on the halfway line, everyone was shouting for a foul & red card, the referee ignoring all the protests & waved play on, a good decision, as Blair had kept possession, and moved the ball quickly forward to Dampier who was jostled off the ball on the edge of the area. With the ball run out of play, attention turned to the referee to punish the assault on the half way line, no one had noticed the linesman on the far side standing tall with his flag across his chest. The player that assaulted Thomas only received a yellow, but the Penalty was maybe just punishment. Up stepped Sam Gutridge, who sent the keeper waddling the wrong way, to put Blair strongly in command.

The second half started, and as expected Phoenix came at Blair strongly. But with Grant Steele & Tom Patching winning everything in the air, and Craig Harvey & Jack Waud not allowing anything to come across from the wings, Phoenix were left with only long range speculative efforts or set pieces, none of which really troubled Joe Ainsley in goal. With Phoenix tiring quickly, Blair were poised on the counter attack, and should have had a few more goals, naivety letting them down on occasion, but they did manage to add two more goals through the tremendous Aiken Thomas & substitute Curtis Ripley.

The 4-0 score line didn’t flatter the Reserves at all, they deserved all the credit they received and the ovation from the 1st team players, who cheered them in one by one as they entered Star Meadow Club, where, I’m told, the celebrations went long into the night.

The best day in the Clubs history? Well, let’s just hope there's lots more to come!
